Consistent Mesh Generation for Non-binary Medical Datasets

چکیده
This paper presents a new approach for constructing a consistent (non-manifold) mesh based on non-binary datasets. Mesh generation is the method of choice if a surface is extracted based on labeled volumetric datasets. In most cases, the traditional Marching Cubes algorithm or one of its extensions is applied for generating meshes of binary labeled input data. However, for different – especially medical – applications, non-binary datasets with more than two differently labeled voxels can be adjacent in a rectilinear grid. For these cases, the traditional Marching Cubes algorithm fails. Additional to the mesh generation algorithm, an extension for a well-known geometric filter is presented avoiding ridges in the mesh.

Constructing Smooth Non-Manifold Meshes of Multi-Labeled Volumetric Datasets
This paper presents a method for constructing consistent non-manifold meshes of multi-labeled volumetric datasets. This approach is different to traditional surface reconstruction algorithms which often only support extracting 2-manifold surfaces based on a binary voxel classification. However, in some – especially medical – applications, multi-labeled datasets, where up to eight differently la...
متن کاملHigh-Quality Consistent Meshing of Multi-label Datasets
In this paper, we extend some recent provably correct Delaunay-based meshing algorithms to the case of multi-label partitions, so that they can be applied to the generation of high-quality geometric models from labeled medical datasets. Our approach enforces watertight surface meshes free of self-intersections, and outputs surface and volume meshes of the different tissues which are consistent ...
متن کاملA mesh generation procedure to simulate bimaterials
It is difficult to develop an algorithm which is able to generate the appropriate mesh around the interfaces in bimaterials. In this study, a corresponding algorithm is proposed for this class of unified structures made from different materials with arbitrary shapes. The non-uniform mesh is generated adaptively based on advancing front technique available in Abaqus software. Implementing severa...
متن کاملContext-aware mesh smoothing for biomedical applications
Smoothing algorithms allow to reduce artifacts from mesh generation, but often degrade accuracy. Thus, we present a method that identifies staircase artifacts which result from image inhomogeneities and binary segmentation in medical image data for subsequent removal by adaptive mesh smoothing. This paper makes the following specific contributions: caps, which are flat regions, resulting from s...
متن کاملStaircase-Aware Smoothing of Medical Surface Meshes
The evaluation of spatial relationships between anatomic structures is a major task in surgical planning. Surface models generated from medical image data (intensity, binary) are often used for visualization and 3D measurement of extents and distances between neighboring structures. In applications for intervention or radiation treatment planning, the surface models should exhibit a natural loo...
